December 11th, 2018, was the most important day of my life. Even though I read that newspaper from cover to cover, I felt as if there was nothing that mattered to me. Normally, newspapers consist of the significant news for the general population.
Information in the newspaper may be essential, however, the world is full of events that would not be reported and are only meaningful to a handful of people. For example, it could be a big occasion, such as a marriage or moving overseas. It could also be an encounter with someone, or travel to a certain place, which seemed insignificant at the time but becomes a special event in retrospect, though there seemed to have been nothing out of ordinary when it initially occurred. Moreover, a painful or sorrowful event can make us what we are today after we come to terms with the experience.
I photographed numerous significant events recognized by the majority of people during the time I have lived, and likewise, small ones that were not as well known. This project consists of two distinct elements: first: newspaper reports of recognizable news, from 1978, the year I was born, to the present, which are overlapped with portraits of figures related to the news; and second: portraits of people around me photographed on meaningful days for them that are then layered with newspapers dated from those particular times.
Several years have passed since the uncontrollable outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease pandemic worldwide, and recently new struggles have begun. At this very moment, people are dying and others are being born; someone is crying while others are laughing, and there are certain events that seem crucial and others that seem trivial. I am eager to know what will happen with the virus and these continuing conflicts, just like the rest of the people around the world. However, at the same time, I am also very concerned about the whereabouts of my wallet that I found missing yesterday. Today can be just another ordinary day for many people, but for someone else, it can be an important and irreplaceable one.
