关于这项工作
This body of work is based on Kudaka Island, located in Nanjo City, Okinawa, Japan.
When I first visited the island, I experienced a strange sensation, as if I were being watched. Although the landscape was beautiful and compelling, I felt an unexpected hesitation, as though I should not casually release the shutter. The feeling remained with me long after I left.
Over the following years, I returned to the island many times. Gradually, I came to understand that what I had sensed was not fear, but the presence of life that permeates the land itself. Wind moves through the trees, plants sway, and countless living creatures continue their activities. Regardless of human presence, the island constantly breathes and endures.
Kudaka Island is often referred to as the “Island of the Gods.” Many traditional rituals are still practiced there today, and even certain sacred sites remain inaccessible to local residents. The island’s people regard the land and its vegetation not simply as resources, but as gifts entrusted to them by the divine.
In this work, I focus on non-human presences such as wind, light, and plants. Through them, I seek traces of the beliefs, spirituality, and perceptions of nature that have developed within this place. Most of the images are made using long-exposure pinhole photography, while others are created with conventional lenses. Combining film, hand-developed negatives, and digital processes, I move across the boundaries between different techniques and ways of seeing in an attempt to capture the time, atmosphere, and presence that inhabit the landscape.
Rather than documenting the island itself, this work reflects on the relationship between people and nature through the presence of life embedded within the land.
本作は、沖縄県南城市にある久高島を舞台に制作している。
初めてこの島を訪れたとき、人影の少ない静かな景色の中で、何かに見られているような不思議な感覚を覚えた。島の風景は魅力的でありながら、簡単にシャッターを切ってはいけないという思いが残った。
それから数年後、再び何度も島を訪れ、その感覚はこの土地に満ちる生命の気配だったのではないかと考えるようになった。風が吹き、植物が揺れ、生き物たちが活動する。人間の存在とは関係なく、島は絶えず呼吸を続けている。
久高島は「神の島」と呼ばれ、現在も多くの祭事が受け継がれている。島の人々は土地や植物を神から与えられたものとして捉えている。島民ですら普段は立ち入ることができない神聖な場所も存在する。
本作では、風や光、植物など人間以外の存在へ意識を向けながら制作を行っている。そうした存在に目を向けることで、その場所で育まれてきた自然観や信仰が風景の奥から立ち現れてくる。
作品の多くはピンホールカメラによる長時間露光で撮影しているが、一部にはレンズを用いた写真も含まれる。フィルムによる撮影と現像を経て、デジタル処理によって作品を完成させている。異なる技法や価値観の境界を横断しながら、その土地に流れる時間や気配を写し取ることを試みている。
本作は久高島の風景を記録するためのものではない。土地に宿る生命の気配を手がかりに、その場所で育まれてきた自然観や信仰、そして人と自然との関係を見つめている。
